Miss Tejas Shankaran (18) sprinted towards finish line to secure her Silver Medal finish but shocked to see her team mate and close friend & rival Miss Anushka Purandare (16) already on the shore. But then realized that Anushka got disqualified for her wrong turn in the last loop of 500 mts.
The inaugural race of 5 K (Women) & 10 K (Men) National Sea Swimming Championships in Porbandar (Gujrath) on 3rd Jan. 16 attracted 52 men & 17 women marathon swimmers from all over India. The race was organized by Shri Ram Sea Swimming Club, Porbadar under auspices of S.F.I. This local club of enthusiast has been organizing races in various distances for District & State Level. However, with the help of friends, sponsorers and various agencies, they took a big step to expand it at National Level.
Miss Tejas was on close 3rd position most of distance however she overtook Anushka in last 1000 mts. where Anushka got confused and swam toward finish point to shock herself for disqualification. Tejas’s 1.57 hrs effort put her to 2nd position on podium. Youngest Master Sampanna Shelar (14) manage to secure 6th place overall.
All these 3 swimmers recently completed 14 K River Hoogly National Long Distance Swimming Competition in Kolkata (West Bengal). Anushka was in 6th position in 1.55 hrs. Just 1 min behind her Tejas touched 7th position. Sampanna’s all out efforts in senior category put him in 6th position. He clocked 1.42 hrs.
All of them are looking forward for famous 5 K State Championship from Sunk Rock to Gate Way of India on 10th Feb. 2015 and following day on 11th Feb. Sampanna will be attempting to swim 25 K across Prawn’s Light House to Vashi Bridge.
Meanwhile, Pune Government announced and honoured me by awarding ‘Best Coach of The Year’. This award is for only one coach chosen from all sports disciplines.
