What`s your workout? The Next Big Swim After the English Channel

Living in San Francisco, Randy Edwards was always intrigued by the idea of swimming to Alcatraz Island. In 2009 he signed up to swim the 2-mile crossing with a colleague, having never done any swimming outside a pool or a pond.

“I think it’s always important, both physically and mentally, to have a challenge planned,” he says. “Once I committed, there was no turning back.”

Mr. Edwards, 48, quickly learned open-water swimming was far different from the competitive swimming he did in high school. He started swimming in San Francisco Bay with a group called the Dolphin Swimming and Boating Club. Despite water temperatures in the 60s and colder, he got hooked on the new workout.
