Ali beats ladies world record!

On Tuesday 20th July JLDSC member Alison Wood set off very excitedly from la Coupe Point at 07.08am heading for France - finally after booking her swim 4 years ago! Ali, a seasoned swimmer, was seen off by many well wishers despite the very early start. Ali's impressive swim record includes the Jersey round island swim in 1995 and the English Channel in 1997.

Ali was accompanied by pilot "Charlie" Gravett and co-pilot Mick Le Guilcher in the club boat Sea Swimmer. Also aboard to help and look after Ali, were Tracey Huish - in training for her own Round Jersey swim next month, and Bianca Kempster who swam around Jersey last year. Both have also swum in an English Channel Relay! Tracey was responsible for Alison's feeds.

By all accounts the swim progressed well from the offset with a very happy swimmer in great conditions. There are no landmarks on this swim from which to judge your progress just an open expanse of sea and even when the coast of France becomes apparent swimmers are advised not to look on any account!

Ali remained a strong swimmer throughout the day and some eight hours and seven minutes later she was standing on French soil (actually sand but who cares!) having taken the Ladies World record from Sarah-Jane Stirling (now Jones and a JLDSC member) by a mere three minutes.

Congratulations Ali on a fantastic swim from all at the JLDSC, we're proud of you.
