Swimming at the top of the world

On 22 May 2010, Lewis Gordon Pugh undertook a 1-kilometre swim in the freezing waters of Pumori Lake – a glacial lake at an altitude of 5,300 metres under the summit of Mount Everest on the Khumbu Glacier – to call attention to the hazard of glacial outburst flooding in the Himalayas. Such flooding is caused by runoff from rapid glacial melt, which scientists believe is caused by global warming.

The immediate danger of glacial lake outburst flooding is to the people and environments directly in the path of torrents that have broken the banks of glacial lakes, wiping out property, roads and electric plants as well as people, livestock and wild habitats. ‘Temperatures in the Himalayas have risen by 1ºC since the 1970s, and are rising by 0.06ºC each year,’ notes Pugh. ‘Scientists working with UNEP have pinpointed 44 glacial lakes that are filling up so quickly they could overflow within five years.’

Dutch relay record at the Channel Crossing

The IJsselmeer Bikkels succeeded in their intention to complete the Channel Crossing in a Dutch relay record. Webmaster Richard Broer, Hans Peter Hartog, Ralf van der Poel, Ron van der Harst, Roel de Hoop and Marcel van der Togt did the distance in relay form in 8 hours and 57 minutes. That was over a half hours faster than Haagse Bluf (with Jan van Daalen and Paul van Scheijndel) in 1969. They had a time of 9 hours and 29 minutes on the clock.

At the 22K IJsselmeermarathon Stavoren – Medemblik in the Netherlands, there is a brother-sister lock on the record book.

The personable Olympic 10K Marathon Swim gold medalist Maarten van der Weijden, who was on his recovery road back from leukemia, set the record for the fastest crossing in 4 hours and 20.58 minutes in 2004.

75 years later: Teen makes history as first woman to swim length of Donner Lake

The original article by Sylas Wrightwith was posted on Sierra Sun (with historical pictures) since Wednesday, August 18, 2010

Take away the lakeside mansions, public piers and motorized boats, and Donner Lake looked much the same on Aug. 18, 1935 as it does today.

On that historic date, however — exactly 75 years ago to the day — there was a sight in the middle of the lake that was clearly out of the norm during the Great Depression era.

It was a teenage girl, flanked by two wooden rowboats as her light-colored swim cap undulated in the chop. And she was swimming from the west end of Donner Lake clear to the other side.
