Messalonskee’s Rushton recounts two-leg swim across the English Channel

The temperature hovers a few degrees above freezing, and under a night sky, the only sound is that of waves slapping the side of a boat.

Erik Rushton stands on its side, just a few feet above those waves. And then he jumps in. It’s not a dare, but it is a challenge. Rushton is part of a four-person team trying to relay round-trip across the English Channel.

And it’s his turn.

Ross Edgley: 'It was goosebumps upon tears, upon smiles'

He had swum for 157 days around the entire coastline of Great Britain, but as Ross Edgley approached the finish of his epic adventure, he was energized by something "special" in the water.

He had battled extreme fatigue, cold, pain, jellyfish stings and parts of his tongue falling off during the 1,792-mile journey, but there to greet him on a freezing November morning were 300 swimmers to guide the weary traveler to the shore.

Great East Swim set to return next year

Swimmers are getting on their marks, as the biggest open water-swimming event in Suffolk, the Great East Swim, is set to return next year.

Organisers have announced that the date for the next event, at Alton Water near Ipswich, is June 22. Around 2,000 people of all ages and abilities are expected to take the plunge at the major charity challenge, while thousands will also turn out to watch and support them.

A country park in Northamptonshire will host open water swimming from June 2019, a sport described as "freedom, adventure and fun all rolled together". Delivered by Northamptonshire County Council, the outdoor activity will take place at Sywell Country Park next year offering people the chance to swim in a safe and controlled environment.

Ross Edgley sets record for round Great Britain swim

An adventurer from Grantham has become the first person to swim 1,780-miles around Great Britain.

Ross Edgley, 33, was joined by 300 swimmers for the last mile before he arrived in Margate at about 09:00 GMT.

Edgley left the Kent town on 1 June, and has not set foot on land since, swimming for up to 12 hours a day and eating more than 500 bananas.

Leah Chowdhry gets Woman of the Year honour at London Asian Business Awards for English Channel swim

Leah Chowdhry, one of the first young British Asian women to swim the English Channel, has been conferred the Woman of the Year award the London Asian Business Awards. She was honoured, along with other achievers from different fields, at the 2nd London Asian Business Awards ceremony held in the UK capital on October 29.
